Ten Margarita Recipes That Will Make You Wish for Summer

It’s winter: cold, gross, a little grey, and a lot boring. However, regardless of how frightful the weather is outside, you can create all the ambiance of summer you need inside. You just need the right drink. Here are ten margarita recipes that will knock your feet back into your flipflops—we just don’t recommend trying them all on the same day.

1. The Historical Margarita:

No one is completely sure when the margarita became a thing (oddly enough, no one can quite remember that cocktail party), but one of the origin stories traces its advent back to 1941, when bartender Don Carlos Orozco, who had been experimenting with drink recipes that day (hence the memory loss), offered his new creation to Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German ambassador. Since she was the first to try it, he named it after her.

The recipe:

Rub a slice of lime around the rim of your glass, then dip it into salt for the perfect salt rim. Then add equal parts tequila, orange liqueur (Controy or Naranja), and lime to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake, serve, and enjoy.

2. The Classic Margarita:

The modernized version of the classic offers some slights modifications. Add 30ml fresh lime juice, 30ml Cointreau or triple sec, and 60ml white tequila to an ice-filled cocktail shaker, shake that booty (the cocktail, I mean), pour into a salt-rimmed glass, squeeze in a wedge of fresh lime, and enjoy.

Okay. Time to spice things up a bit.

While nothing says (or rather slurs) summer like tequila, there are a few more creative spins on the old classic that really bring the summertime fun into high gear—just don’t drink enough that you actually think it’s summer and run outside in your bare feet.

3. Charrita Margarita Cocktail

Step one: ditch the salt rim and exchange it for a mix of sugar and cayenne pepper—but don’t throw out the bits that don’t stick to your rim: those bad boys go into the cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice, and (before that pepper melts it) add 1.5 oz. Platinum Tequila, 0.5 oz. Agave nectar, 0.75 oz. Orange liqueur, and 1.25 oz. Lime juice. Pour unstrained into the prepared glass, and garnish with a lime wheel. If that doesn’t knock your socks off, you probably aren’t human.

4. The Mamacita

This one’s a little weird—but a delightful splash of tequila, complete with all the ambiance of end-of-summer rhubarb pie. Add 40ml tequila blanco, 30ml rhuarb cordial, 15ml Becherovka, 25ml fresh lime juice, and one egg white in a dry shaker. Mix, add ice, then mix again to chill. Strain into your glass and enjoy.

5. Speaking of weird: The Avocado Margarita

Muddle the flesh of one large, ripe avocado with 45 ml agave nectar, then push the paste through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Stir in ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice. Add 60ml tequila reposado, 30ml lime juice, 15ml triple sec, and 2 heaping tablespoons of your avocado puree into an ice-filled shaker. Strain into a glass, garnish with a lime twist and a pinch of sea salt, and drink it on your yoga mat.

6. The Bloody Mezcal

Salt the rim of a glass with lime and chili salt (1 tsp dried, ground chili and 1/2 tsp salt). Blitz 60ml mescal, 60ml blood orange juice, 10ml lime juice, and 15-20ml sugar syrup in a blender with a large handful of ice, pour into a glass, and enjoy.

7. The Raspberry Lemonade Margarita

Nothing says summer like pink lemonade—unless it’s pink lemonade and tequila. Blend 1 cup of raspberries, 1 ½ cups lemonade (or raspberry lemonade), 1 cup of tequila, ½ cup triple sec, and ¼ cup sugar in a blender; add ice and continue blending or serve on-the-rocks in a sugar and lemon rimmed glass.

8. The El Tamarindo

Add 60ml tequila, 30ml tamarind purée, 15ml sugar syrup, and 15ml triple sec into an ice-filled shaker. Shake, and serve in a lime and chili salt-rimmed glass.

9. The Jalapeno Margarita

Because some like it hot. Mix 1 ½ parts Tequila Cazadores Reposado, ½ part premium triple sec, ½ part agave nectar, ½ part lime juice, and ½ part lemon juice in an ice-filled shaker. Add a slice of jalapeno, shake, and serve over the rocks. Garnish with a lime wedge. Let us know if your mouth stops burning.

10. The Oh, Canada

Mix together 2 tbsp fine salt and 2 tbsp maple syrup, then dip your rim. Fill your cocktail shaker with custom Canadian hockey rink ice, then add 3 oz. tequila, ½ oz. whiskey, 2 oz. maple syrup, and the juice of 1 lime. Shake, serve on-the-rocks with a lime garnish, poutine, a side of Molson Canadian, ten hockey pucks, and a beaver—that’s what summer looks like in Canada, right?
